Family Meals in Minutes
Providing quick, healthy and cost-effective meals is the ultimate challenge for harried parents. Kids who eat regular sit-down dinners with their family take in more fruits and vegetables, and scarf down fewer fried foods and soft drinks when they're away from home. They also benefit from higher self-esteem, school performance and development. FMIM works with a transitional living community to help busy families integrate healthy food, cooking and eating into their lives through conducting cooking/nutrition workshops for young parents.
Studies show that healthy eating and daily physical activity have a profound overall impact on the body and mind. GHS focuses on inspiring healthy eating by implementing a family nutrition and health pilot program curriculum that includes a Spring/Fall harvest event, monthly nutrition/cooking workshops and activities geared toward mobilizing families to promote healthy eating.
The Junior Leagues' KITK program addresses the growing issues of childhood obesity and poor nutrition. Since the early 1970's, the number of overweight children ages 12-19 in the United States has doubled, and the number of overweight children ages 6-11 has tripled. This project is a League-wide event across four countries that collaborates with the community to raise awareness and help communities address the urgent issues surrounding childhood obesity and poor nutrition.
Girl Scouts help build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. With more than 2,500 troops, Girl Scouts, San Diego-Imperial Council is one of the largest U.S. Girl Scout councils. A collaborative effort with The Girl Scouts of America, this project will offer Saturday workshops helping Girl Scouts learn about nutrition, fitness and earn health badges & patches.
Be Healthy Toolbox provides health and nutrition tools to families of 1st grade students at four schools in the San Diego Unified school district. Reusable grocery bags contain tools to help parents and students get started on a healthy lifestyle. Families also attend an evening event where they learn about healthy cooking tips, proper hydration and other tips for healthy living.
Impact activities are "Done-in-a-Day" projects supporting health, nutrition, learning, education, and leadership. All of the Junior League of San Diego's Active and Provisional members participate in these projects. Impact San Diego provides hands on volunteer opportunities that result in an immediate impact on the community.
