The Junior League is an international nonprofit organization that promotes women’s leadership, philanthropy, and community volunteerism. The Junior League of San Diego’s community focus area is food insecurity.
“Data consistently show that women are especially vulnerable to food insecurity and its health consequences. Research from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reveals that food-insecurity rates for households with children headed by a single mother (30.3 percent) and for women living alone (14.7 percent) are particularly high.” Oftentimes, women must make a choice between buying food for their families or diapers and feminine hygiene products, especially because food stamps do not cover either latter purchase.
Because of this need, the Junior League of San Diego identified an opportunity to create a diaper bank and period pantry to support the San Diego community.
In 2020-2021, JLSD procured 20,000 diapers and 3,000 period products. In 2021-2022, JLSD blew past those goals by procuring and donating 35,000 diapers and 33,000 period products.
In 2022-2023, JLSD seeks to beat our goals from last year by increasing donations by 50% to 50,000 diapers and 50,000 period products. After procuring the items, we will donate them to community organizations such as: Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego, Casa de Amparo, San Diego Youth Services, Jewish Family Services of San Diego, the Monarch School, and the YMCA Youth & Family Services Transitional Housing Program.
