Current Projects

The Junior League of San Diego's Community Projects will reduce childhood obesity in San Diego County and will improve the health and nutrition of San Diego's children by inspiring parents and children to make healthy eating and exercise a regular part of their lives. In order to accomplish this goal, the League is facilitating seven programs in the community. From growing a garden at Central Elementary School to putting together healthy meal plans for young families, the programs outlined below provide distinct tools for parents and children to improve their health.

2009-2010 Community Projects

Kids in the Kitchen — Helping San Diego address the urgent issues surrounding childhood obesity and poor nutrition during a one-day health and nutrition fair for children and their parents that occurs in March, during National Nutrition Month.  Free event, open to public.  Event is held by Junior League’s throughout the country.

Be Healthy Family Nights -  Increasing health awareness by giving first graders and their parents at four schools in the San Diego Unified School District ideas and tools to integrate healthy living into their lifestyles.  The schools are chosen because they also employ a Parent Academic Liaisons (PALs) to assist parents with using the Be Healthy Toolbox materials.  An evening event where families can visit various booths and learn everything from healthy cooking tips to proper hydration.

Healthy Scouts — Encouraging health and nutrition by running workshops for San Diego Girl Scouts to achieve nutrition and health awards.  The Highway to Health program is a tour of imaginary cities.  In each city, the Girl Scouts learn something about nutrition, fitness or health.  At the end of the day, the Girl Scouts earn a Highway to Health badge.  This is a hands-on and interactive project with the girls ages 6-14.

Family Meals in Minutes - Encouraging and inspiring young and at-risk families to integrate healthy food, cooking, and eating together into their lives.  This committee works with a transitional living apartment community for young adults/parents run by San Diego Youth & Community Services.  Take Wing is a transitional living community specifically designed to break the cycle of homelessness for youth between the ages of 16 and 24 who are on their own (youth under the age of 18 must be legally emancipated from their parents).

Impact — Making an immediate impact on the community through short, intensive projects that are completed in a single day.
