Lillian Bradley: Pioneering Philanthropy

Founder of the Junior League of San Diego

In early 1927, Lillian Bradley, serving as Chairman of San Diego’s 18th Annual Charity Ball, embarked on a transformative journey. Inspired by the Pasadena Junior League’s mission, she resolved to establish a Junior League in San Diego (JSLD).

Teaming up with her friend Emily Clayton, Lillian founded the Junior Committee for San Diego Charities to secure admission into the Association of Junior Leagues of America (AJLA). Their efforts paid off in 1929 when the Junior League of San Diego became the fifth League in California and the 105th member of AJLA.

Since then, JLSD, under various leadership, has been integral in addressing community needs. Initiatives like the Day Nursery and collaborations with organizations such as Voices for Children and LEAD San Diego have left a lasting impact.

Guided by Lillian Bradley’s vision, JLSD continues to serve the community. Today, it focuses on combating Food Insecurity, building upon a legacy of compassion and dedication. Lillian Bradley’s pioneering spirit remains an inspiration as JLSD navigates the challenges of the present with resilience and determination.
